ABOUT THE SPECIAL NEED: Leprosy is an infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium Leprosy. The way people get infected with Leprosy is not completely understood.

It is suspected that Leprosy causes infection by people breathing the bacteria into their lungs. Once inside the lungs, Leprosy causes a skin infection.

The skin infection can be terrifying in its appearance and typically involve the eyes, hands, feet, and face. The skin infection is not reversible but is painless because Leprosy destroys the skin it infects including the nerves that cause pain to the infected skin.

The damage is not reversible, people infected with Leprosy require lifelong rehabilitation.
